The Golden State is Entirely Drought-Free for the First Time in 25 Years.
Following 25 long years, every region of the state is enduring drought conditions. This milestone comes on the heels of difficult years marked by below-average rain that exacerbated blaze threats and pressured its huge agribusiness.
An Update Shows No Dryness
A recent update from the U.S. Drought Monitor illustrated that California in its entirety is clear of dry or drought conditions. This change resulted from weeks of heavy precipitation that helped fill water storage sites like the state's largest lakes far beyond their historic averages.
“To those aged 25 and below you’ve spent your life in a world where California has been grappling with drought,” noted a climate scientist.
From Intense Storms to Wet Holidays
Achieving this status involved severe and lethal winter storms that battered the state in 2023, leading to extensive inundation, electrical failures, and deaths. While those storms began to alleviate the drought, they fell short of ending it.
As late as late December, pockets like northeastern California were still classified as experiencing dryness. Subsequent downpours at the onset of 2026 finally erased those final dry conditions.
A Crucial Snowpack Remains a Concern
Yet, experts warn that drought-free conditions should not be confused with complete water security. Recent measurements of the high-elevation snow show it at approximately 70 percent of the historical norm.
This snowpack, which supplies a significant portion of the state's water as it melts in the spring, is an essential component for the year ahead. Water officials stress that it is not yet time to draw conclusions for the coming year.
“The current pattern right now is increased rainfall over snowfall,” said a hydrology section chief. “Our hope is for the snow accumulation to improve by 1 April so that we’re closer to average.”
Even as the official status indicates no dryness, the focus now shifts to maintaining this positive water situation during the rest of the year.
