Marnus Labuschagne has been dropped from the three-match ODI series facing India, with high-performing Queensland teammate Matt Renshaw receiving a unexpected inclusion.

Performance Issues Result in Omission

Selectors dropped Labuschagne from the one-day international team after managing only a single run in each of his two innings during the recent series against South Africa in August. He has a best innings of forty-seven in his last 10 ODI innings.

The 31-year-old has played 68 one-day internationals and accumulated 1,871 runs at an average of 34.64 runs per dismissal, but will now work towards a Test recall ahead of the Ashes starting in Perth on 21 November.

Renshaw's Return and Other Squad Changes

Labuschagne has shown signs of a return to form with 160 for Queensland in the domestic first-class competition this week, while Renshaw also hit a century for the Bulls in the same game against Tasmania.

Renshaw is in line to make his white-ball international debut in the upcoming series against India after his last inclusion in an ODI squad in 2022.

The left-hander has played 14 Tests with the most recent appearance in India in 2023 but is also hoping for a return to the Test team as Australia seek a answer to their opening batting issues.

Fast bowler Mitchell Starc is back for the ODI series against India after taking a break since starring for Australia in the 3-0 Test series sweep of West Indies in July.

BBL performer Mitch Owen may earn his ODI debut after being concussed in the build-up to Australia’s last 50-over series against South Africa.

ODI captain Pat Cummins is still unavailable as he aims to recover from a back injury by the time to lead Australia in the opening Test of the Ashes in November.

Squad Selection Strategy and Fixtures

Australia have announced a squad for only the initial two T20 matches against India with the Ashes approaching, although Glenn Maxwell will sit out the five-match series due to a wrist problem sustained in New Zealand.

Mitch Marsh will skipper both the ODI and T20 teams after smashing a century in the final game against New Zealand to clinch a series clean sweep last week.

“Selectors have announced a squad for the ODI series and first two games of the T20 series as there will be rotation through the later stages of the series as players get ready for the summer through Sheffield Shield cricket,” Australia chair of selectors George Bailey said.

“The majority of the T20 squad will remain together as it’s an crucial phase in the preparation for the T20 World Cup next year, however we are trying to strike a balance to ensure we simultaneously prepare certain individuals for the Test series ahead.”

Australia’s three-match ODI series against India starts on October 19 in Perth, before the opponents play five T20 internationals from 29 October.
