Doris Secures Spot in Irish Squad But Joe McCarthy Omitted

Ireland rugby team selection update

Newly reappointed head coach the Ireland coach has named skipper Caelan Doris in his Irish squad for the autumn matches, but lock McCarthy has been excluded.

Doris, absent from play since undergoing shoulder surgery in the start of May, recently returned to Leinster training, with doubts lingering if he will be fit to play against the All Blacks in the US on November 1.

Second row McCarthy, however, was not considered after not recovering from the foot injury he sustained during the opening British and Irish Lions Test against the Wallabies in the summer.

Northern province forward Cormac Izuchukwu and southern province winger Calvin Nash also miss out due to injury, while number 15 Keenan was previously excluded after undergoing hip surgery after the summer tour.

Dublin province prop Paddy McCarthy - Joe's younger brother - is the sole uncapped member in the 34-player group, but Irish rugby authorities states new Munster pair Edwin Edogbo and Brian Gleeson and previously capped Connacht wing Shayne Bolton will head to the US as "reserves".

Following facing the All Blacks at Soldier Field in a rematch of their previous meeting, the team will play the Brave Blossoms, the Wallabies and world title holders the Springboks in Dublin.

"It's an exciting group to the panel and there's an opportunity for the veteran members and for the newcomers on the recent tour to Georgia and the Lobos," said the coach, back to national team duties after a break to lead the British and Irish Lions to Australia.

In a mostly experienced selection, the Dublin club's Prendergast and the southern club's Crowley will once again vie for the first-choice number 10 spot. The number 10 jersey is remains up for grabs, with Prendergast and Crowley poised to face off for the first occasion in Saturday's URC game at Croke Park.

Ciaran Frawley is the additional fly-half selected with the coach deciding not to selecting Leinster's Harry Byrne.

At number 9, Farrell has selected Lions tourist Gibson-Park and Casey, who led the national side to the summer international victories over Georgia and the Lobos. Additionally, there is a return for the western province's Blade, chosen to teammate Murphy.

Robbie Henshaw, Bundee Aki, Ringrose and Stuart McCloskey form an experienced cohort of midfield options. Osborne is another option in the centres, but the youngster is also a leading candidate to deputise for the full-back at full-back.

Outside backs James Lowe, Hansen, O'Brien and Jacob Stockdale are named. The winger impressed on his first Ireland outings during the summer with a brace each in the victories over Georgia and the Lobos.

McCarthy is the sole new addition in the Ireland forwards. The loose-head prop has been in two of his province's URC United Rugby Championship games so far and featured in Ireland A's defeat by the English in the English city earlier this year.

The 22-year-old was included in interim boss O'Connell's summer squad, but did not receive a international appearance.

Munster second row Thomas Ahern, who received his debut appearances in those matches, is kept in the squad, and veteran Ulster lock Henderson is back after missing the summer matches.

Conan, who started all three Lions Tests during the tour, is poised to cover for the captain should the skipper fails to recover full fitness soon enough to play New Zealand.

The Ireland squad will meet in Dublin on Monday before flying to the US on the following day.
