Cancellieri Shows Flashing Moments of Exceptional Talent in Positive Aspect for Struggling Lazio

The atmosphere at Lazio's home ground was far from happy during the weekend fixture. The Biancocelesti found themselves behind against Torino, a side that had let in ten goals while scoring only two in their most recent five league matches. Ultras from the Curva Nord were concluding their latest protest in a continuous dispute with chairman Claudio Lotito.

A Season Coming Unstitched?

Was Lazio's season unraveling, or was there ever any cohesion keeping it intact in the first place? The club brought back Maurizio Sarri to lead the team in the summer transfer window, before he publicly stated that the management had omitted to inform him about the transfer ban they were set to be hit with for financial irregularities. Speculation that he could resign were not true, but he did say that Lotito had "misled" him.

The Roman club appeared equally disorganized during matches as behind the scenes, defeating Verona 4-0 and Genoa 3-0 but losing the remaining opening fixtures, which included the capital clash. Throughout this period, it has been hard to ascertain if they're getting better or imploding.

Matteo's Unexpected Presence

One individual kept smiling throughout. Matteo Cancellieri was not even supposed to feature for Lazio this year. He completed the previous campaign on loan at Parma and, early this summer, his parent club were pushing for him to extend his stay for another season. The signing restriction forced a rethink. Lazio could not afford to thin their squad without replacements.

Cancellieri arrived originally under Sarri's first spell, at that time a 20-year-old graduate of Verona's academy. He recorded 20 matches in the league in Lazio colors in the 2022-23 season, all but one of those from the bench. The club's longtime sporting director, Igli Tare, whose tenure ended after that campaign, would later accuse Sarri of "promising everyone Cancellieri had superstar potential but then not selecting him."

Uncovering His Natural Fit

Maybe Sarri was persistently working to determine the exact type of his skill set. Labeled as an attacking winger on arrival, Cancellieri nevertheless spent most of that campaign as an ineffective backup to Ciro Immobile in the striker role. During 63 outings during spells with Empoli and Parma in the past two years, he scored seven times. Shoehorn
