Both Deceased Students Revealed in the Ivy League School Shooting as Police Press On With Manhunt for Gunman.

Two students who lost their lives in the weekend's mass shooting in Providence were honored at the start of the week – while an intensive search for their shooter persisted following the discharge by Rhode Island officials of the only individual detained in connection in the case.

Honoring a Lost Student

Ella Cook, a second-year student from Alabama, was remembered as “an amazing, stable, pious, radiant soul”, per the Advent Cathedral in Birmingham, which paid tribute to her at a ceremony on Sunday.

She served as second-in-command of Brown’s division of College Republicans of America, the group said. The White House press secretary also shared condolences on social media, saying in part: “There are no words. Thinking of her family and friends, particularly her mother and father.”

MukhammadAziz Umurzokov

The other deceased individual was MukhammadAziz Umurzokov from Uzbekistan, an Uzbek national in his first year of studies at the prestigious university, his family confirmed.

His name was confirmed by the foreign office of Uzbekistan.

“He was exceptionally gentle, witty, and bright. His ambitions were lofty of pursuing a career in neurosurgery and assisting patients,” his sibling Samira said in a memorial statement.

The Shooting Incident

Nine other people were wounded in the weekend shooting in the school of engineering of Brown’s university in Providence, during the school’s final exam period.

Law enforcement reported on Sunday evening that a 24-year-man arrested in a police operation at a hotel about approximately 17 miles from the university earlier in the day was set to be freed.

“A perpetrator remains free,” declared the state's top prosecutor, Peter Neronha.

He added, “Sometimes you head in one direction, and then you have to regroup and head another way, and that’s exactly what has happened over the last day or so.”

Public Fear

Providence’s mayor, Brett Smiley, admitted: “It is expected to provoke new worry for our public”.

The shooter began shooting inside a classroom in the engineering building on over the weekend, discharging in excess of 40 shots from a 9mm pistol, a law enforcement official informed the media outlet.

Police that raided the hotel seized a pair of pistols and magazines when the suspect was taken into custody, the news agency reported.

Those Hurt

Of the nine hurt, one student was allowed to go home, mentioned the university president, Christina Paxson. Seven more were in critical but stable condition, and one remained in critical care, police said on Sunday.

Durham Academy, a independent school in the city of Durham, said a recent graduate, Kendall Turner, was among those critically wounded.

Further Tributes

Tributes were paid to Cook at a religious service in Birmingham on Sunday. A clergyman said, “She shone as a remarkable, stable, devout beacon not only during her upbringing... but at Brown University she was a shining example in that specific location as well.”

Martin Bertao, Martin Bertao, posted a statement from the organization. “Ella was recognized for her bold, brave, and kind heart as she served her chapter and fellow classmates,” he said.

Jonathan Henick, Jonathan Henick, said he was “deeply saddened” by the passing of Umurzokov in a statement. “We offer our heartfelt sympathies to the Umurzokov family, friends, and fellow students and mourn the loss of his promising future.”

The weekend's murders at Brown, the country's seventh most historic college with about thousands of bachelor's and 3,000 graduate students, took place amid one of at least 392 shooting incidents recorded nationally so far in 2025, according to records. That Monday marked the 349th day of the year.
